Lily Tomlin is an American actress and comedian who began her career as a stand-up comic as well as performing Off-Broadway during the 1960s. Her breakout role was on the variety show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In from 1969 until 1973. Some of her popular skits included Edith Anne, and Ernestine the Operator. In 1974, Tomlin was cast by Robert Altman in her first film in the role of Linnea Reese in Nashville which won her several awards and nominations for the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 1977, her performance as Margo Sperling in The Late Show won her the Best Actress Award at the Berlin International FIlm Festival, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. Other notable films include 9 to 5, All of Me, Big Business, Flirting With Disaster, Tea With Mussolini, I Heart Huckabees, and Grandma. A signature role, written by Jane Wagner, was in the Broadway show titled The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe won her the Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play. She won her first Emmy Awards in 1974 for writing and producing her own television special, Lily. She won a Grammy for her 1972 comedy album This is a Recording, which she followed up with And That’s the Truth. She starred in many television shows including Saturday Night Live, Murphy Brown, Sesame Street, Carol Burnett, The West Wing, The Simpsons, The X-Files, and the award winning The Lily Tomlin Special, She currently stars on the series Grace and Frankie as Frankie Bergstein, a role which has garnered her four consecutive Emmy nominations.
