Terrific 1920 High School Seniors' Photograph Album / Lawton, Ok
TERRIFIC 1920 HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS’ PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM / LAWTON, OK. On offer is an extremely interesting photograph album depicting the seniors of the Class of 1920 of Lawton High School in their final year in the handsome building that then housed their school. The old building survives and now houses Lawton’s city hall. The building, whose address is 809 C Avenue, Lawton, OK, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for Comanche County. Lawton is the county seat of Comanche County in southwestern Oklahoma, about 87 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. Founded in 1901, it was named after Major General Henry Ware Lawton, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient killed in action in the Philippine-American War. It’s best known for its proximity to Fort Sill Military Reservation. SIZE: The album measures 8-1/2″ x 5-3/4″ x 1 deep. It has 54 pages with content and 20 pages that are blank. WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THIS ALBUM: This is no “follow the usual pattern”, modern-day school annual with everything all neat and tidy and predictable. Rather, it appears to be a gift, probably by a parent or older sibling, to a member of the 1920 class that gives vivid life to the clothes, activities, and attitudes of the class. The little album practically breathes spontaneity. THE ALBUM’S LAYOUT & DESIGN: The album contains over 215 individual photographic elements. Among them are both (1) 126 cutouts of individuals and small groups (students and teachers) wearing clothes typical of the start of the Roaring’20s and (2) 93 intact photographs that have not been cut (although the edges may have been trimmed – it’s hard to tell). Most of the images are identified in generally decipherable handwriting. Among the photographs are several of football activities and also of a railroad station. In the album’s pages stylish students like Edna and Josephine stand alongside middy-bloused Adelaide, Eva, and Edith, outshone by Ruth and her perfect ringlets. “Ex” cuts a dash in jodhpurs and boots, Paul poses “bow-legged” by a fire hydrant, Count slouches in his school sweater, football players skirmish, and “The Twins” look impossibly innocent. The kids play leapfrog, pretend to be drunk or to smoke, hold fake weddings, and lounge about, looking impossibly blasé. CONDITION: The album is still relatively intact, but the cover is coming loose from the spine at the front bottom, has been reinforced with tape on the front, and is worn overall, with fraying at the edges. The interior of the album has pages that are well-handled but are otherwise intact. The photographic contents – within the context of the album’s original layout and design – are overall in good condition but with some fading of several images. From the clue of glue remnants, there seem to be three missing photos. Please consult the photographs, as they form part of the description. The photographs that show white flashes are the result of a combination of extremely shiny finishes and lights necessary for photography. An extremely appealing album that provides a window into the teenage world of 1920. Would make an excellent addition to the reference library of a costume designer or historian of costume.
